Windows Autopatch is a new upcoming feature which Microsoft has anounced for Windows Enterprise. This is going to be another way of deploying the updates to devices, hence making second Tuesday of every month as ‘just another Tuesday’.
What is Autopatch and why there is need to have Autopatch
With the evolution of new technology and never ending demand of organization nowdays, getting the patches deployed in organization is utmost. Waiting for patch tuesday ie. when Microsoft releases the patches on monthly basis is not the only option. Microsoft is coming up with the approach with a new technology called Autopatch which will reduce the gap of making the security updates ready and getting it deployed to devices. Hence giving IT admins to plan and rollout the updates in sequenced manner. Whether it is Quality updates or security updates, all kind of updates will be benefit with this approach.
Windows Autpatch is a managed service which overall removes the burden of deploying the update process. The process of deploying the updates will move from IT department to Microsoft.
Pre-requisites for Windows Autopilot
There are few licensing requirements for Windows Autopatch:
- Windows 10/11 Enterprise E3 and up – Enterprise mobility and Security license E3 / E5 is required
- Azure AD Premium – for co-management device (SCCM co-management). Azure AD Premium 1 or Premium 2 license required
- Microsoft Intune License – This is included in Configuration Manager, version 2010 or greater as part of SCCM co-management.
Devices covered under Windows Autopatch update
All Windows 10 and Windows 100 devices are covered udner it for quality and feature updates, drivers, firmware and Microsoft 365 apps
Limitation of Windows Autopatch
It is not suported for Windows Server OS
What is supported under Windows Autopatch
Windows Autopatch is supported for on-premises domain joined devices only when it is in Hybrid Azure AD mode, for this Microsoft Intune license is required.
All versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11 are supported
Windows 365 for Enterprise is supported, however Windows 365 for Business is not supported.
Windows Autopilot report is included as part of Update compliance report.
